I did another of my monthly KBOO shows last night.
The episode archive, for those who missed it, can be found here.

Lots of craziness, live mixing, etc.

Rock-N-America sat at the pivot-point between innovative rock video and generic inanity. As MTV and the videos submitted labels and artists sank into superficial banality, this syndicated TV show (usually on right after SNL) followed suit.

Where in its earliest incarnation - with the conceit that it was some slacker kid (played by Canadian comedian Rick Ducommun) transmitting his own pirate version of MTV from his mother’s basement (she would often yell at him from upstairs) - the videos ran the gamut from fairly mainstream (interesting to note that not everyone was making rock videos yet - it tended to be artists in the New Wave or Pop spectrum) to really peculiar stuff by The Residents, Barnes and Barnes and artists most people hadn’t heard of. There were even some short films and comedy clips. This was the golden age of the rock video, too, with some pretty amazing stuff from Godley and Creme, Zbigniew Rybczynski, etc.

By 1984, the format was nearly completely changed. The videos were much more mainstream in selection (Van Halen, Cyndi Lauper, Eurhythmics, etc) and someone thought that it would be a good idea to replace Ducommun’s schlumpy but likeable kid character with a soulless party animal character with a neon yellow suit and wayfarers (played by comedian and KROQ DJ Frazier Smith). Maybe they were trying to make some kind of comment on the nature of the music biz and influence of rock videos in corporate rock.

The new show was unfunny and the skits were annoying and the videos were exactly what you’d see if you switched over to MTV. Boring.

I think the show hung on in syndication for another year or so and then quietly faded out.

I cannot take credit for this. Fucking genius though.
